Description
An antsy horse named Antz demonstrated he was aptly named when he became spooked during a walk Saturday and ran away.
Doug Hanna, 33, of Malabar was walking Antz at around 8 p.m. east on Hall Road when a driver gunned his engine as he passed by, scaring the horse, which bolted.
“He threw me about 5 feet in the air and stepped on my hip in the process,” Hanna said. “But I’m not worried about me. I’m worried about him.”
Hanna said he was walking Antz toward Weber Road in Malabar, and that’s the last place he saw the horse, as he got up off the ground and gave chase. He has been looking ever since.
Hanna said the area in which Antz was running has a lot of woods and trails. Hanna’s been looking throughout those areas, but he also worries that Antz might walk along a highway and become a danger to himself, drivers or pedestrians.
“My biggest fear is that he’ll get hurt,” Hanna said.
Antz is 15.2 “hands high” and weighs about 1,200 pounds, Hanna said. He’s a 6-year-old gray thoroughbred with black legs, dapples or little circles on his hind legs and orange freckles on his face. His mane and tail are gray.
“And his feet are in great condition,” Hanna, a podiatrist, said. Hanna said Antz doesn’t wear shoes, but he was wearing a black halter and a 14-foot white lead rope.
Hanna said he rescued Antz a year ago from a shelter called Horse Protection Association of Florida in Micanopy, a small town near Gainesville. He had been neglected and near starved.
“But he has a very strong will,” Hanna said.
